The Early Years

First National Bank of Oklahoma was founded in 1916 as the First National Bank of Tonkawa. At that time the state of Oklahoma was less than 10 years old, and both the state and the Kay County region was in the midst of an era of economic optimism and expansion. The great oil boom in Kay County started in June 1911, when Ernest W. Marland discovered oil on the Ponca allotment of Willie Cries (Crys)-for-War. With its initial charter, the bank aimed to provide reliable financial services to the burgeoning population and businesses of Oklahoma, encompassing both oil and gas related businesses and the region’s agricultural base.

Throughout the mid to late 1900’s the bank embraced USDA Agricultural and Community lending programs to support farm production and SBA programs to enhance small business growth in the state.
